Western Heights Primary School in Auckland
Ross Stewart made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education
The request was successful.
From: Ross Stewart
Dear Ministry of Education,
I am deeply concerned regarding Western Heights Primary school in Auckland in its attitude towards a support staff member/s whom recently has retired in 2020 after contributing over 8 years of voluntary service in reading recovery for the children of Western Heights Primary School Auckland.
Maybe it would have been approximate for the school even the schools board members to have shown or recognized such a person/s in showing some appreciation in recognition of such dedicated service by thanking the person/s in question for such dedication towards schools children.
The principal of Western Heights Primary School in Auckland, Ash Maindonald has been written to regarding this matter however as of date I have not received any reply which I find abhorrent.
Is this the current attitude being endorsed by the Department of Education towards volunteers that should be instilled in young children minds within New Zealand schools.?
I look forward to you as the Ministry of Education, regarding the poor treatment shown to school volunteer people which perform such a valuable service in the education in New Zealand schools,
Yours faithfully,
Ross Stewart

Ministry of Education
Dear Ross,
Thank you for sharing your concern regarding Western Heights Primary
school and the treatment of a retiring volunteer. We take all complaints
seriously and we have logged your communication in our system today.
The Ministry of Education regard all voluntary service as an asset and
acknowledge the valuable services volunteers provide to our schools,
teachers and students.
Under the Education and Training Act 2020, schools are governed by the
Board of Trustees who employ the school Principal to manage and lead the
school. The matters you raise are internal management issues that we would
expect to be resolved at that level. It is important that you request and
use the schools complaints process. As you have already written to the
Principal, Ash Maindonald, it would be normal procedure to raise your
concerns formally with the employing body (the BOT) and write to the Chair
Person of the Board of Trustees, Nicola Yelash.
If you have further concerns please do not hesitate to contact me
directly.
Regards,
Kim Basse
