Christchurch City Council selling public transport assets (Red Buses)

Lily made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council

The request was partially successful.

From: Lily

Dear Christchurch City Council,

Noting that public transport is vital to the community, especially people living in higher deprivation areas and of lower SES (socio-economic status), what is the criterion for Christchurch City Council to seek a sale of Red Buses as an option.

Additionally noting that Red Buses employs people from the community and an important employer for many, and the greater need for public transport due to the current economical situation is Christchurch City Council's current position to consider the seek a sale of Red Buses as an option.

From an article by Conan Young on Radio New Zealand titled 'Christchurch red bus fleet could be sold after council weighs options' it states 'Whatever was decided [by councillors], the views of ratepayers would likely not be taken into account.' and [A potential sale was discussed by city councillors behind closed doors two weeks ago as the council grapples with the prospect of a lower rates takes due to businesses closing, and at the same time, calls for a zero per cent rates increase.]. Are these statements factually true.

Also noting that Christchurch City Council spent $1.24 million on a touch wall, is the Christchurch City Council position at all regretful about the purchase.

Yours faithfully,

Lily

Good afternoon Lily,

Thank you for your query.

I have heard back from CCHL who has advised the following:

The Council considered advice from CCHL in relation to the future options
for the investment in Red Bus in a Public Excluded (PX) meeting during
May.

Kind regards,
