Ratings and Production Information for the OnDemand Series, BossBabes

Alex Janssen made this Official Information request to Television New Zealand Limited

The request was partially successful.

From: Alex Janssen

Dear Television New Zealand Limited,

Pursuant to Section 12 of the Official Information Act 1982, please provide, if any:

- Total Viewership numbers, broken down by date, for the OnDemand Show, BossBabes, from Tuesday 6 August to Tuesday 15 August when the data is available.

-All information on the cost of advertising for the series, including all billboard, electronic billboard, and bus stops advertisements.

-Any information regarding early screenings to non-TVNZ reviewers and employees, and which media or Public Relations companies they were affiliated with.

-If possible, a list of the names and positions of the production team for BossBabes. Inclusive of the person from Warner Brothers who initially pitched the show to TVNZ.

I believe the identity of the person who reached out to Iyia Liu to be part of the series is of the public interest for the following reasons:

1) This establishes the reason why a controversial businesswoman such as Iyia Liu was pitched for a scripted reality show during a time that a Fair Trading Act investigation was being conducted into her company by the Commerce Commission.

2) To establish any conflicts of interest between the staff of TVNZ, Warner Brothers, and other media outlets who are known associates of Iyia Liu.

Yours faithfully,
Alex Janssen

Dear Alex

We refer to your request of 7 August concerning BossBabes.

We calculate total streams over a weekly period, and can confirm that the total number of streams for the period 6-12 August (the first week the programme was available on TVNZ OnDemand) was 81,380. To give context to this number, this placed BossBabes as the fourth most watched programme on TVNZ OnDemand during that period, and the highest amongst programmes that feature exclusively on TVNZ OnDemand.

Advertising costs are withheld under section 9(2)(i) of the Act in that this is commercially sensitive information. Much of the promotion of the programme was through TVNZ's own assets (both broadcast and online).

The names and roles of the production team credited on BossBabes are available at the end of each episode. For completeness we can confirm that they are:

Director of Photography - Murray Milne
Story Producer - Stephanie Damm
Camera - Paul Mockridge
Camera - Isabella Walsh
Post Production Co-ordinator - Annisa Korengkeng
Online Editor - Matthew Stanley
Colourist - Todd Columb
Colourist - Connor Ayliffe
Graphics - Adam Shrosbree
Graphics - Aaron Clarke
Audio Post - Elliot Lawless
Audio Post - Cooper Garnett
Assistant Editor - Jordan Metzger
Editor - Dan Pavis
Editor - Ash Stewart
Writer - Bill Kerton
Voice Over Artist - Hayley Sproull
Legal Counsel - Caroline Joll
Head of Development - Joanne Law
Head of Operations - Georgina Sinclair
Series Producer - Alysha Kennedy
Network Executive - Vicki Keogh
Executive Producer - Emma White

Warner Bros Television New Zealand advises that the pitch to TVNZ was a team effort and not by any one individual. The person within Warner Bros who made contact with Iyia Liu is not known to TVNZ and not relevant to us. This is therefore withheld under Section 18(g) of the Act, in that the information is not held by TVNZ.

In our view the withholding of the information is not outweighed by other considerations which render it desirable in the public interest to make it available. In accordance with Section 19(b) of the Act we advise that you have the right to seek an investigation and review of the above refusal by making a complaint under Section 28(3) to an Ombudsman.

Yours sincerely

Dear Brent McAnulty,

How many seconds must someone watch a TVNZ programme to be counted as a stream? Must an OnDemand viewer see an advertisement before they are counted as a stream?

Yours sincerely,

Alex Janssen
