I refer to your request of 6 May concerning Heartbreak Island.

We can confirm that the first season of the programme, which screened at
7.30pm, had an average audience of 150,000 per episode.  The second series
was broadcast at 9.30pm (towards the back end of prime time viewing) and
had an average of 56,000 people per episode.

On TVNZ OnDemand there were 605,000 streams in Season 1 and increased to
770,595 in Season 2.

Accounting and production information is commercially sensitive between
TVNZ and our production partner, Imagination.  As producers, Imagination
was responsible for applying for any grants.  The programme did not
receive NZ On Air funding.  Imagination may be able to assist you further
o other grants they applied for and received.  Other than that, the
information is withheld under section 9(2)(b)(ii) of the Act.

The programme followed our normal approval channels for a production of
this magnitude in that it was commissioned by our Content team and
approved by the Executive team.

In our view the withholding of the information is not outweighed by other
considerations which render it desirable in the public interest to make it
available.  In accordance with Section 19(b) of the Act we advise that you
have the right to seek an investigation and review of the above refusal by
making a complaint under Section 28(3) to an Ombudsman.
