Winds and cyclones

Sabelina Smith made this Official Information request to Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited

The request was partially successful.

From: Sabelina Smith

Dear Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited,

Could you please provide me with a list of the cyclones (and similar events such as hurricanes, tornado etc) for the past 10 calendar years? Would appreciate if you could include the highest wind gusts of that event showing the city most affected.

Yours faithfully,
Sabelina Smith

Kia ora Sabelina,

Thanks for your OIA request regarding cyclone activity received on the 23 May 2019.

There is a list of tropical cyclones in the South Pacific, which can be found here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Paci...

It tracks back to the 1970s – listing each cyclone and has quite comprehensive details about each one – including peak intensity of the wind. I don’t believe that it specifically lists, which cities were most affected however.

A source of information for historic weather events is CliFlo, be https://cliflo.niwa.co.nz, the national climatological database managed by NIWA which receives data from 600 sites, MetService and NIWA add data in to Cliflo daily, CliFlo data is free to access.

I hope this satisfies your enquiry.

Best wishes
Andrea
