Student voice in Student Services Fees
Eloise made this Official Information request to Massey University
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Eloise to read recent responses and update the status.
From: Eloise
Kia ora,
I am conducting some research regarding Student Services Fees at different tertiary education providers, and how providers gather learner voice in determining fee allocations. I would like to request the following information from your institution regarding Student Services Fees (SSF or CSSF) —
1. The means in which learners or their representative groups are consulted about Student Services Fees, such as annual surveys, forums, student positions on SSF committees, and consultation on changes to significant SSF-related decisions.
2. A copy of the questions asked in any annual or regular surveys related to Student Services Fees (such as a PDF print out of survey questions).
3. How students are informed of the outcomes of such surveys and consultations, and whether survey responses are made publicly available or provided to students via other means.
4. A breakdown of the most recent budget allocations for SSF categories, such as the amount allocated to students’ associations, health centres, sports, and pastoral care services. If this is unavailable, the most recent proportions of allocations to SSF categories.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like clarification on any of these requests.
Ngā mihi nui,
Eloise Fleming

Kia ora Amy,
Mō taku hē for the slow response! It's wonderful to see Massey University is already so transparent about its Student Services Fees 😊
I think the two things we were wondering were —
1. Is it possible to obtain the total amount (or percentage of overall SSF allocations) allocated to Massey's students' association, Te Tira Ahu Pae?
As this might be a bit unusual for 2025 due to a change in funding structure, the 2024 amount (or percentage of SSF allocation) would be wonderful 😊
Although we're aware the TEC guidelines splits this into more service-based categories, a big part of what we're looking to understand is how students' associations tend to sit within Student Services Fees allocations.
2. Would we be able to obtain a copy (for example, a PDF export) of the full annual survey's structure/questions, including introductory information and demographic questions, for the most recent year,?
We're interested to see how institutions communicate information and ask questions within their surveys, and what kinds of information they seek (such as disability status, identifying with rainbow communities, etc). We're only interested in the survey structure itself, and not the responses from students (as we recognise some of those are likely retained as internal information).
Ngā mihi nui for all your help!

Kia ora Eloise,
I have used the report ([1]available here) to show the total amount
allocated to Te Tira Ahu Pae in 2024 below. Where it says TTAP it goes
directly to them so:
* Representation, Advocacy and Financial Advice 9%
* Student to Student Communication 2%
* Club Grants 1%
* Clubs and Events 6%
Total: 18%
I believe it is 20% in 2025 (the report for that period should be out in a
few weeks time).
[2]@Janine Dean - are you able to share with Eloise the questions that
were decided by the SSF Advisory Group for the SSF survey for 2025 (she
highlighted question below)?
Noho ora mai rā,
Amy
