Policy on Drug Detector Dogs

Joshua Grainger made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Joshua Grainger

Dear New Zealand Police,

I would like to request under the Official Information Act any policy document that the Police have on the use of drug detector dogs. I am particularly interested in any guidelines that the Police have of the use of these dogs in public schools.

The reason for my request is that in overseas jurisdictions, notably Canada, the use of drug dogs has been declared a search and thus requires probable cause. I am interested to know what the policy for use is here.

Feel free to contact me if you wish me to clarify my request. With regards to s12(1) of the OIA, I am a New Zealand citizen resident in New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,

Joshua Grainger
