Drink Drive Statistics

David Burgess made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: David Burgess

Dear New Zealand Police,

Yesterday, national road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths said (Quoted from NZ Herald)

(1) "For most people two drinks is well under [50mg]"

(2) "Research showed that at the current limit, drivers aged over 30 were about 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than if they were sober."

(3) "Research showed that at a 50mg limit, drivers aged over 30 were about 5.8 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than if they were sober."

My questions are

(A) Can Carey Griffiths please show the source of this data, as it appears to contradict international research.

(B) Can the word "Involved" be clarified, as obviously only situations where the driver was at fault are relevant.

Yours faithfully,

David Burgess

The MOT statistics appear incorrect. They have considered only crash statistics and have arrived at their relative risk figure without a control group. That is to say, if you don't know how many individuals are at any particular BAC, it is not possible to ascertain risk in the manner they have done.
