Change of Paid Parental Leave Opinion

Joshua Grainger made this Official Information request to Families Commission

The request was partially successful.

From: Joshua Grainger

Dear Families Commission,

Recently, according to this article (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/...), Families Commissioner Carl Davidson announced that he did not support extending paid parental leave due to it being too dear. I would like to request under the Official Information Act some information relating to this.

First: I would like to request any information, including reports, memos, emails, correspondence, papers, costings, or any other documents that this statement was based on, or that Mr Davidson considered in making this decision.

Second: I would like to request any correspondence with officials outside of the Families Commission related to Labour's private members bill to extend paid parental leave, including any correspondence with MPs.

Feel free to contact me if you want me to clarify my request. I look forward to receiving your response by the statutory deadline, which according to the Ombudsmen's calcuator (http://www.ombudsmen.parliament.nz/index...) is the 21st of May.

Yours faithfully,

Joshua Grainger

Dear Joshua

This is in response to your Official Information Act request dated 20
April 2012 with regard to the change of paid parental leave opinion.  I
will respond to your questions in the order that you have posed them

Families Chief Commissioner Carl Davidson was either misunderstood or
misinterpreted by the NZ Herald newspaper which referred the Commission as
‘reversing its support for paid parental leave’.  Please find attached a
copy of a letter sent to the editor of the NZ Herald, Tim Murphy on 15
April clarifying our position.  This was subsequently printed in the NZ
Herald on 19 April 2012.  Please find a copy of this attached as well.

First, as identified above, the Commission has not changed its position
therefore there are no reports, memos, emails, correspondence, papers,
costings or any other documents that this statement was based on.

Second, there is no correspondence with officials outside the Families
Commission relating to Labour’s private members bill.  The Commission has
not corresponded with any person about this matter including MPs apart
from the attached letter to the editor of the NZ Herald.

I hope this information is helpful. If you require further information,
please feel free to contact me.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review of my response from
the Ombudsman whose address for contact purposes is:
