Please confirm the exact amount of the Customs Duty penalty applied to Chevron in 2009 which was waived as a result of a "bank error" advised by JP Morgan Chase Bank
Rixi made this Official Information request to New Zealand Customs Service
The request was successful.
From: Rixi
Dear New Zealand Customs Service,
My name is Rob Lewis, I was the CEO of JP Morgan New Zealand from 2008 - 2010.
I am aware that Chevron missed a customs duty payment of some $38,000,000 in mid 2009 which was caused by an error at the bank.
I recall that New Zealand Customs Service applied a 5% penalty to the payment. The amount of the 5% penalty was approximately $1,900,000.00, which New Zealand Customs Service graciously waived after a confirmation that it was an error by JP Morgan Chase Bank which had caused the late payment.
Can you please confirm the exact amount of the penalty? This is relevant to High Court proceedings in New Zealand between myself and JP Morgan.
Yours faithfully,
Rob Lewis
