Sexual assaulters highschool

Nick dowse made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice

The request was refused by Ministry of Justice.

From: Nick dowse

Dear Ministry of Justice,

Could I please have the number of people convicted of sexual assault or sexual harassment crimes between 01/01/2009 and 12/12/2018 (inclusive), grouped by the high school that the assaulter or harasser attended? (Eg 10 people at this highschool, 12 people at this highschool).

(They don’t need to have been attending the highschool when they committed the crime, i mean just the highschool that they attended).

If a person attended more than one highschool, they can be counted for both high schools, and if they didn’t attend any highschools they can be grouped under an “other” category.

If grouping the data like this into high schools is not possible, could you please return the educational history of peoples convicted of sexual assault or sexual harassment between 01/01/2009 and 12/12/2018 (inclusive)?

If educational history is not available, could you please return the names of those convicted of sexual assault or sexual harassment in the date range specified above?

Yours faithfully,

Nick Dowse

Dear Sir/Madam/Correspondent,

Thanks for taking the time to look into this. I am of course disappointed that this information is not available to the public, and I completely understand the right to privacy of those convicted. However I do believe there is a correlation between attending a single sex school (as a male) and sexually assaulting someone.

Given the prevalence of sexual assault in New Zealand I think it's important that we verify this correlation either way. There are too many victims every day to ignore information which could change how we view these acts, and how we prevent them. The Ministry of Justice can carry out this investigation, indeed from your response it seems that they are the only ones who can, and I would encourage them to investigate further in the hope of preventing them from needing to bring justice in these sorts of cases in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Nick Dowse
