Dear Fred

Official Information Act 1982 (“the Act”) Request

I refer to your email of 3 January 2019 where you asked for information on
any requests made to certify or grant permission for unmanned drone
aircraft to drop poisons to control mammalian pests/animals in New
Zealand.

The CAA has not authorised any UAS operator under Civil Aviation Rule Part
102 for the application of vertebrate toxins such as 1080.  Any
authorisation would have to be made under CAR 102 Unmanned Aircraft
Operator Certificate and the applicant would have to provide suitable
mitigations for the risks associated with the application. This would
include holding a UAS pilot chemical rating including VTA, a UAS pilot
agricultural rating including the VTA. And a pilot qualification under CAR
102. (reference AC61-15 page 8).

Currently we have 4 Part 102 operators authorised for agricultural work
(topdressing and spraying) with 4 applications in the approval process.
None of these operators are authorised for VTA.

I hope this satisfactorily answers you request.  If you have any further
questions you can contact me at [1][CAA request email] or (04) 560 9472.

Kind regards
