Hi Karen

The discharge consent for the Omakau truck wash expired in 2012 and has
not been replaced.  I have attached a copy of the consent for your
information but they may be operating under our Permitted Activity rules.

Hi Tracey

Can you please look up to see if this truck wash in Omakau has a discharge
permit? And if so what their monitoring is like... if they have conditions
on their permit for monitoring.

Cheers

Dear Tracey Diack,
Thank you for the prompt response to my request.
I can look up your 'permitted activity rules' but they are unlikely to allow this operation to be leaking effluent into our neighbouring property constantly (for years actually but our Dad had dementia and didn't make a fuss when he was living here.)
The Manuherikia River is also impacted and the increase in residential activity in the town does not need this type of environmental negligence.
The stench in the summer is unbearable (worse for us as neighbours obviously but also the town centre.) How can an operation like this continue in this day and age?
As neighbours of the Manuherikia River we are committed to improving it and this 'activity' if permitted is simply a JOKE!
I would like to see the ORC take some action without us having to take this further. Please monitor and address this situation URGENTLY or I will take this to the media Tracey.
Please keep me informed of the situation going forward.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Frewen

Hi Karen

This site was visited in November 2017 after a complaint was received. One of our investigators went on site and determined that no breach of our rules had occurred at the time of the visit. There are tanks used to store the effluent which are emptied out about 2 times a week and the sludge removed about every 2 to 3 months.

If you feel the truck stop is breaching our rules please ring the Pollution Hotline number (0800 800 033) at the time so we can have someone go to site to determine any breaches in our rules.

Thank you

Dear Tracey Diack,
A pollution hotline is not a solution for us as this is a constant problem (not an occasional one.) The site visit in November was instigated by myself and at that time Beckers Transport admitted they had been in breach of the rules and needed to up there game with regard to emptying the tank more regularly etc (obviously not recorded above.) Since that time we have become more aware of on-going negligence. The tank appears to have been leaking for years ON TO OUR PROPERTY AND NEAR A RIVER and some locals have confirmed this. There are serious issues with dust & smell from this site which the main street & surrounding home owners suffer constantly. I will be taking this up directly with the company to see if they will work with the ourselves and the community to solve these issues. Failing that, the media have been in contact already and we will be heard one way or another.... I would have liked to see a more pro-active response from yourselves however.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Frewen
