Peter Ellis Interviews Destroyed
Ross Francis made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was partially successful.
From: Ross Francis
Dear New Zealand Police,
On 12 June 2009, the Police’s Ian McArthur emailed his colleague Scott Spackman about videotaped interviews of complainants involved in the Peter Ellis case. Mr McArthur advised Mr Spackman that “I have made enquiries here and been advised we do not hold the tapes.” He also advised Mr Spackman that someone at Police – “presumably Carolyn Richardson” – informed Leslie Brewer from CYFS that Police did hold the files. Ms Brewer, says Mr McArthur, made an “inquiry” to Police “last year” [ie, 2008] about the existence or otherwise of the videotaped interviews. In his email to Mr Spackman, Mr McArthur said that he has “made enquiries with CYFs in Christchurch and today was contacted by a Ms Leslie Brewer (Privacy officer) and advised that CYFs do not hold the tape copies.”
Please provide me with all records of communication in 2008 between CYFS in Christchurch and Police, and records of all communication between Carolyn Richardson and CYFS, about the existence or otherwise of the videotapes.
Please provide me with all records, including but not limited to file notes, job sheets, letters, memos, emails and deleted emails, about the enquiries made by Ian McArthur (and the response) in regards to the existence of the aforementioned videotapes.
Yours faithfully,
Ross Francis
