Public access to dog pounds
Lloyd Jerome made this Official Information request to Far North District Council
The request was successful.
From: Lloyd Jerome
Dear Far North District Council,
I am making an official request under the LGOIMA guidelines regarding public access to the council-run dog pounds, both temporary and permanent.
I understood that the Council's pounds were not open to the public. However on the FNDC website recently someone stated that they have recently visited the pound to adopt. The message is below. Would you please advise if this is correct, and if so, when can the public visit the pounds?

Dear Mr Jerome
Official Information Request – RFS 3897618
I refer to your official information request received 2 July 2018. Your
request has been referred to Legal Services for consideration under the
provisions of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act
1987 (“the LGOIMA”).

Our response
The Kaitaia dog pound is located next to an operating wastewater treatment
plant and is therefore inaccessible to direct public access. Access to
this site is therefore restricted for health and safety reasons. The
Horeke dog pound is located on private property leased to Council. This
property is not owned by Council so access is negotiated with the land
owner. Council does not authorise direct public access to the dog pound.
The visit mentioned was an exceptional circumstance which occurred by
pre-approved arrangement.
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yours faithfully
