The request was successful.
From: Malcolm Lock
Dear New Zealand Police,
In relation the the four firearms seized in a west Auckland raid, details of which can be found here https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/1007420...
1) Was the serial number of 1 x Aero Precision X15 .223 cal MSSA rifle with free standing pistol grip visible and legible?
2) Was the serial number of 1 x Aero Precision X15 .223 cal MSSA rifle with free standing pistol grip and Magpul collapsible stock visible and legible?
3) Was the serial number of 1 x Colt M4 carbine .22 LR cal MSSA rifle with free standing pistol grip and Magpul collapsible stock visible and legible?
4)Was the serial number of 1 x Aero Precision X15 .223 cal MSSA rifle with free standing pistol grip and Magpul collapsible stock visible and legible.?
Providing this information will not prejudice the maintenance of law, including the prevention, investigation and detection of offenses and the right to a fair trial as it is not required in any prosecution to determine if a firearm has a serial number or not. All that is required is to prove it is a firearm as per the Interpretation of a firearm under the Arms Act 1983 as quoted below.
firearm—
(a)
means anything from which any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile can be discharged by force of explosive; and
(b)
includes—
(i)
anything that has been adapted so that it can be used to discharge a shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile by force of explosive; and
(ii)
anything which is not for the time being capable of discharging any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile but which, by its completion or the replacement of any component part or parts or the correction or repair of any defect or defects, would be a firearm within the meaning of paragraph (a) or subparagraph (i); and
(iii)
anything (being a firearm within the meaning of paragraph (a) or subparagraph (i)) which is for the time being dismantled or partially dismantled; and
(iv)
any specially dangerous airgun
There is no requirement for a firearm to have a serial number under the Arms Act 1983. In fact the words serial or number do not appear in the Act at all.
Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Lock
