Ocean radiation monitoring

Jason McIntosh made this Official Information request to Ministry for the Environment

The request was successful.

From: Jason McIntosh

Dear Ministry for the Environment,

Due to the media silence over the Fukushima disaster I am naturally concerned about the health of the Pacific Ocean and the fish that arrive here for consumption. Does your ministry or any other govt entity monitor the radiation levels in our water, air and food ? If not why not ?

Yours faithfully,

Jason McIntosh

Tçnâ koe Jason,

Official information request for Ocean radiation monitoring.

I refer to your official information request dated 25 April for:

“Does your ministry or any other govt entity monitor the radiation levels
in our water, air and food ? If not why not ?”

We have transferred part of your request to Ministry of Health. Part of
the information to which your request relates “radiation levels in our
water, air” is believed to be more closely connected with the functions of
Ministry of Health. In these circumstances, we are required by section 14
of the OIA to transfer your request.

You will hear further from Ministry of Health concerning that part of your
request. If you wish to get in contact their email is [email address].

In our view, it would have been necessary under section 14 of the OIA to
transfer the remaining part of your request to Ministry for Primary
Industries. Part of the information to which your request relates
“radiation levels in our … food” is believed to be more closely connected
with the functions of Ministry for Primary Industries. However, we are
aware that you have already made your request to this agency, and
therefore we have not transferred it.

We are refusing this part of your request under Section 18(e) –
Information requested does not exist of the Official Information Act 1982
(OIA).

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Ngâ mihi,
