Use of dowsing

B. White made this Official Information request to Wellington City Council

The request was successful.

From: B. White

Tēnā koutou,

I am interested in the use of dowsing techniques by employees and contractors used by your council when working with water, e.g. pipe leaks, water sources, etc.

Please release the following information:

1. If any Council or Council Controlled Organisations staff use dowsing as part of their job

2. If any contractors employed by Council use dowsing as part of their work when engaged by the Council

3. If any dowsing companies explicitly offering dowsing services have been engaged by the Council.

4. For any of the above, what costs were incurred by the Council.

Please give me this information for as long as records are available.

If any part of my request is unclear, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Ngā mihi,

B. White

Dear B. White,

Thank you for your email to the Council received on 21 December 2017 in
which you requested information relating to the use of dowsing.

As you asked a number of questions I will address these in the order of
your email.

1) If any Council or Council Controlled Organisations staff use dowsing as
part of their job

I am unaware of any Council or Council Controlled Organisations who use
dowsing as a part of their job

2) If any contractors employed by Council use dowsing as part of their
work when engaged by the Council

To our knowledge, no contractor employed by the Council or Wellington
Water uses dowsing

3) If any dowsing companies explicitly offering dowsing services have been
engaged by the Council.

Again, we have no record of any company using dowsing being engaged by the
Council.

4) For any of the above, what costs were incurred by the Council.

The Council does not hold any information in respect of costs associated
with dowsing.

5) Please give me this information for as long as records are available.

Whilst there is some anecdotal evidence that dowsing may have been used to
locate pipes some decades ago, there are no formal records held which
confirm any such practice.

Kind regards,

Ian.
