ODESC and watch group meetings

Alex Harris made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

The request was partially successful.

From: Alex Harris

Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,

The "National Security and Intelligence" BIM released today included information on ODESC and its watch groups. It noted that "In 2016-2017, there were 51 Watch Groups and 25 ODESC meetings, on a number of different topics, including [...]". I would like to request the following information under the OIA:

* A list of all Watch Groups active in 2016-2017, along with the topic they address;
* The dates and topics discussed at all ODESC meetings in 2016-17.

I understand some of this material may be redacted under s6(a) as being prejudicial to national security. At the same time, an extensive list of topics was released in the BIM. One of the purposes of this request is to investigate exactly how much of ODESC's watch groups are actually sensitive, as opposed to addressing risks we all know about and would be pleased to hear the government is on top of. I suggest that release would be an example of "continuing the public conversation" stated as a policy goal in the BIM.

I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the fyi.org.nz website.

With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ

Yours faithfully,

Alex Harris
