Organized Crime Groups arrested in the past year.

Callum made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

New Zealand Police did not have the information requested.

From: Callum

Dear New Zealand Police,
I am writing to request a CSV or Excel file relating to all organized crime groups or members of organized crime groups' arrests in the past year in the Auckland region of New Zealand. The names of individuals is not a necessity, but the names of the organized crime groups are.

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Tasker

Hi Callum,

We have received your OIA request.  Are you able to provide some context
to what you require this information for so that we make sure we provide
the right information.  This is not a simple process as there would be a
need to collect information across basically four Districts. In addition
to that people whom might be gang members of members of an organised crime
group that are arrested for a broad range of offences.  Finally there are
people arrested and charged with offences that are members technically of
an organised crime group where the group doesn’t actually have a name.  If
for instance you were wanting to know what people linked to gangs were
arrested in the Auckland area then this might be more achievable

Dear WILLIAMS, Gregory (Greg),
Limiting it to the Auckland area would be good, as to not over-complicate the process. If it makes it easier, perhaps arrests that are directly involved with the organized crime group, as opposed to organized crime members who are arrested for other offenses. If the organized crime group does not have a name, then it is not necessary to include it.

Yours sincerely,

Callum

Dear Mr Tasker

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 31 August 2017,
requesting information relating to organised crime groups or members of
organised crime groups’ arrests in the past year.

Pursuant to section 15A of the Official Information Act 1982, I’m writing
to advise you of the requirement to extend the time limit to respond to
your request. The period of the extension is until 13 October 2017.

The reason for the extension is that the time required for the
consultations necessary, is such that a proper response cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review the decision to
extend the time limit for deciding upon your request.

Kind regards,

Hi Callum,

I was wondering whether we might be able to have a phone conversation
about the material you are asking for just to understand what purpose you
want it for.  We don’t actually keep specific records in a way that can be
easily pulled together.  We would be able to provide information on Gang
members that have been charged with a variety of crimes but again that is
no Auckland specific.  It all comes down also to what you mean by
organised crime group.  If you mean actual gangs that is a little simpler
but we deal with a broad range of organised crime groups by definition
that do not have a specific name but are formed to commit specific crimes
and therefore it is not possible to pull this sort of data back.

Give me a call on the number below or text me with a number and I will
call you
