Can you please provide me how many suicides have been attributed to IRD’s questionable Student Loan collection practices?
Can I also have information on how many times and how often your collection officers receive threats of suicide?
I also require information on how many student loans are being paid back through the proceeds of prostitution.

Dear IRD,
In regard to your response:
Question Two
Since December 2011 Collections Officers have reported 266 threats of self-harm from
customers in debt, this covers all types of debt not just student loans. To put this figure
into context, the total number of customer service contacts received by Inland Revenue
for the 2016 year was 5.55 million.
I find your trivialising of potential 266 suicides troubling?
Would it be fair to say that there have been suicides related to IRD debt collection procedures?
Do you not follow up clients that have threatened self harm?

Dear IRD,
“Inland revenue does trivialise threats of self-harm. In instances where a customer service staff member has contact with a customer that is threatening self-harm the staff member must follow the robust processes in place to manage such occurrences. This may include follow up with the customer”
Considering IRDs robust processes I ask the question: of the 266 cases where a client has threatened self-harm how many have resulted in the clients’ death? I personally know of one case myself so IRD must have this data.
5.55 million customer contacts for the 2016 year out a population of 4.4 million indicates serious harassment. IRD are clearly contacting clients multiple times placing clients in duress.
