From: Louise Jago
KiwiRail
Dear Sir/Madam
We are writing in response to your Official Information Act 1982 request
dated 24 August 2016 requesting information on the status of DBR
locomotives. Your questions and KiwiRail’s response are outlined below:
“ I see that the DBR locomotives are nearly all withdrawn and I would like
to know if any will be refurbished or if one is up for preservation?
Also, I would like to ask of what is happening with DAR 517 and DFT
7049, will the purchase of more DLs affect the south island DXs?”
The DBR 1226 and DBR 1267 locomotives are still operational however; they
will not be repaired in the event of failure.
KiwiRail does not have any plans to refurbish any of the DBR locomotives
and we are unaware of any approaches to preserve an example of a DBR.
The DAR517 locomotive is in ‘Laid-Up’ status but is not economic to
repair, its eventual disposal has yet to be decided.
In the 2016/2017 financial year, a further three DFTs will be taken out of
service and rebuilt as DFB locomotives. The DFT7049 locomotive may be
included in the DFB conversion program however; KiwiRail has yet to
confirm which DFT locomotives will be rebuilt as DFB locomotives.
The purchase of further DL locomotives is not intended to affect the DX
fleet in the South Island.
Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review of this decision by way of complaint to the Ombudsman. Refer to
[1]www.ombudsman.govt.nz for more information.
Regards
Louise
