Vodafone Xone startup accelerator
IP Expert NZ made this Official Information request to Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment
The request was partially successful.
From: IP Expert NZ
Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
I was looking into government award processes for Intellectual Property and new businesses. I recently looked in government support for "accelerators". I spotted two initiatives : Lightning Lab and Vodafone Xone.
My questions are focused around Vodafone Xone, which is 100% operated by Vodafone New Zealand, which in turn is owned by Vodafone Ltd in the UK. (I can find all the required info on Lightning Lab on their website).
Could you please share the following
1) Why was Vodafone Xone awarded a government supported accelerator contract, along side the Lightning Lab program? They seem identical: targeted at digital start-ups.
2) How much money was awarded exactly ? Press releases seem to suggest $900,000 over three years. Can you please confirm?
3) How much money does Vodafone have to invest in the start-ups, alongside the government funding?
4) How is this the government funding allocated and how is this monitored? Vodafone Xone's website list that every start-up (10 in total) get $25,000 in seed funding. This equals $250,000 a year, so where is the other $5,000 of government money going? Is this going to Vodafone to cover their costs?
5) What were the selection criteria for for the start-ups receiving the money, who are they and what progress has been made?
I cannot find any information in the public domain.
Yours faithfully,
IP Expert NZ

Dear Ministerial Services,
Thank you for the answers. I was wondering how these services were procured from Vodafone, by Callaghan Innovation? I seem not to be able to find anything on GETS (http://www.gets.govt.nz) regarding this. Maybe you could provide me with the procurement documentation for this?
Yours sincerely,
