Dear Marc

Thank you for your OIA request of 16 February. I have been assigned to
complete your request.

My understanding from your request is that you would like to know about
people with

Temporary work visas

Persons visiting on holiday or business

Persons temporarily studying in New Zealand

…who have been involved in a crash, or issued with driving infringements,
careless driving, reckless driving and similar offences.

The information I can provide is from the Crash Analysis System. This is
an integrated computer system that contains data from all traffic crashes
reported by Police. Police record all the data from a crash into this
system. For infringements and other offences the Police would hold this
data. We only have the data related to crashes.

In addition, Police are only able to record whether the driver was driving
with an overseas licence and the country in which it was issued. They
cannot determine the visa status of the driver and so this information is
not recorded in the Crash Analysis system so I am unable to provide this
for you.

With these limitations, do you still want the information about crashes
involving overseas drivers, given that I cannot disaggregate the data
according to visa status and bearing in mind that a person may drive on
their overseas licence for up to 12 months before having to convert it to
a New Zealand licence?

I am very happy to discuss with you by phone if you would like to call me
on the number below. I have a meeting now but will be free after 1215
today.

Best regards

Helen
