Removal of One NZ cable infrastructure.

Carl Wiggin made this Official Information request to Hutt City Council

The request was partially successful.

From: Carl Wiggin

Dear Hutt City Council,

I am looking for any information that relates to One NZ decommissioning the old cable network that originally belonged to Telstra.

The questions I want to answer are:

1. Will One NZ be required to remove all cables, cabinets and ducts related to the cable network?

2. Did One NZ pay any rent of fees to use the land for cabinets and poles?

3. When will this decommissioning of infrastructure be done?

Yours faithfully,

Carl Wiggin

Tēnā koe Carl,

I refer to your request dated 17 June 2026 for information regarding One
NZ's decommissioning of its former cable network infrastructure. In
response to your questions:

 1. Will One NZ be required to remove all cables, cabinets and ducts
related to the cable network?

Answer: No. Council understands that One NZ continues to use parts of the
network for other services.

 2. Did One NZ pay any rent or fees to use the land for cabinets and
poles?

Answer: Council is not aware of any rent or fees being paid to Council for
this infrastructure.

 3. When will this decommissioning of infrastructure be done?

Answer: Council does not hold information about the timing of One NZ's
decommissioning programme. This information would need to be sought
directly from One NZ.

Council understands that One NZ is decommissioning some parts of its cable
network. However, information regarding the scope of the decommissioning
programme and the timeframe for the work is held by One NZ rather than
Hutt City Council. As One NZ is not subject to either the Local Government
Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 or the Official Information Act
1982, Council is unable to obtain this information on your behalf. You may
wish to contact One NZ directly if you would like further information
about its decommissioning programme.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this response. Information about how to make a complaint is available at:
[1]Office of the Ombudsman - Complaints, or freephone 0800 802 602.
