Import Data relating to Tesla vehicles

Paul S made this Official Information request to New Zealand Customs Service

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Paul S to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Paul S

Kia Ora,

Under the Official Information Act, I request an extract of import data related to vehicles imported by Tesla New Zealand (or their designated shipping agents) between October 1st, 2025, and the present date:

1, A breakdown of the number of vehicles imported under HS Code 8703.80.00 (Electric Vehicles), specifically requesting the "Goods Description" field for these entries.

I am specifically interested in entries that denote "Evaluation Units," "Prototype," "Type Approval Units," or new sub-model designations (e.g., variations of the Model 3) that differ from the standard RWD/Long Range/Performance nomenclature.

2. Any records of Import Entry documentation that specify the Battery Capacity (kWh) or Motor Power (kW) for new variants of the Tesla Model 3.

Thanks,
Paul S

Kia ora,

Thank you for your email to the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs)
dated 18 February 2026, requesting under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act) regarding imports by Tesla New Zealand.

Under section 15(1) of the Act, we are required to make and inform you of
our decision on your request as soon as reasonably practicable and in any
case not later than 20 working days after the day on which your request is
received.

Customs is unable to process your request within the original time frame
because the consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are
such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made
within the original time limit. Customs is therefore extending the time
frame for a response by an additional 15 working days pursuant to section
15A(1)(b) of the Act.

The new due date for your request is 8 April 2026. Customs will provide a
response to you as soon as reasonably practicable and as soon as it
becomes available.

You have the right, by way of complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman
under section 28(3) of the Act, to seek an investigation and review of the
decision conveyed in this email.
