Tçnâ koe John,
Thank you for your email of 23 January 2026 to the Ministry of Education
(the Ministry) requesting the following information:
I noted,

Teaching Council: 21 January 5pm

Aotearoa New Zealand (“the Council”) due to a resignation of an appointed

you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry
of women etc for your role. How many you have shortlisted and how many you
have interviewed.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).
The call for public nominations was the Gazette Notice, which served as
the official platform for publishing the vacancy and informing the public
of the nomination process. This can be found here:
[2]https://gazette.govt.nz/notice/id/2026-g....
We are refusing the remainder of your request for the number of
applications received from the public and other nominating agencies, as
well as the number of applicants that were shortlisted and interviewed,
under section 18(a) by virtue of section 9(2)(f)(iv) of the Act, to
maintain the constitutional conventions for the time being which protect
the confidentiality of advice tendered by Ministers of the Crown and
officials.
As required under section 9(1) of the Act, we have considered the public
interest in releasing the information withheld. We do not consider that
the public interest considerations favouring the release of this
information are sufficient to outweigh the need to withhold it at this
time. We note that once decisions are made, section 9(2)(f)(iv) generally
no longer applies.
Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review this decision on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the
Act. You can do this by writing to [3][email address] or to
Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.

Dear Enquiries National,
I would like to respectfully request that the Ministry reconsider its response. I am not new to the OIA process and have made hundreds of requests to various agencies in the past. This is the standard template I use to seek information, and I have never previously been refused this type of information. You may wish to review some of your earlier responses to me, in which similar information was provided.
If your decision remains unchanged, I will not hesitate to challenge it through the Ombudsman.
Thank you
Yours sincerely,
john luke

Tēnā koe John
Thank you for your email. With respect, the Ministry treats and process
Official Information Act requests as at the date they are submitted.
Therefore, the information you had requested was unavailable at the time,
as decisions were still being considered for this appointment.
We note that your request was made two days after the advertisement was
made public. If you are submitting requests regarding open applications in
its early stages, then this limits our ability to providing you with the
information you seek.
With the passage of time, we understand that the announcement has been
finalised and made public on 24 February 2026, with news of the new board
member now being appointed. We will now reconsider your request, and
endeavour to have this information sent to you as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding.
