FENZ Fleet Details
S. Reynolds made this Official Information request to Fire and Emergency New Zealand
The request was partially successful.
From: S. Reynolds
Kia ora,
Under the Official Information Act 1982, I request an itemised list of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand vehicle fleet as at the date of this request.
Please provide this information in a structured format (CSV or Excel preferred) including, for each vehicle:
Callsign
Station and Region
Service (Urban, Rural, USAR, Aviation, etc.)
Appliance Type Code (e.g. Type 1, Type 2, Tanker Medium etc.)
Chassis make and model
Body builder / manufacturer
Year of manufacture and year commissioned
Drivetrain (e.g. 4×2, 4×4, 6×4)
Transmission (Auto/Manual/RoadRanger)
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
Water and foam tank capacities
Main pump model and rated output (L/min @ pressure)
Hose reel count (if applicable)
Breathing Apparatus seating capacity
Registration number and VIN
Odometer and/or engine hours (if recorded)
Any noted special features (e.g. PTO pump, winch, Comms support body, etc.)
If full release of all fields would be unduly burdensome, please prioritise inclusion of station, callsign, type, make/model, year, rego number, drivetrain, and tank capacity, as these are key operational characteristics.
I understand that similar datasets have been released previously under OIA (for example, 2017 and 2024 fleet lists), so this request should be able to draw from existing data sources.
Please supply the information electronically.
Ngā mihi,
Craig

From: S. Reynolds
Dear Official Information Requests,
Thank you for the data so far, and I note the comments on operational load to complete some missing ancillary datapoints which I accept. However i note that there are many gaps in key operational data - for example if I filter on Tankers, 141 do not have a tank capacity field - a key characteristic I would imagine.
Likewise there are missing entries - using my local brigade as an example, DARF6926 (Van) or SHEF7125 (Smoke Chaser) is not in the list.
Can you please advise if this is an oversight (and correct the data), or a case of genuine missing data (which should be fixed as an operational task?).
Yours sincerely,
S. Reynolds

As noted in our reply to you of 27 November, we have provided the detail
we are able to collate without undertaking substantial collation and
research. The incomplete data fields, including tank capacities, are due
to this information not being recorded centrally or in a way that can be
easily identified and collated. While tank capacity is a key
characteristic, in some instances this information is currently only
recorded at a local level where it is relevant to operational responses.
For example, to just collate all tank capacities would require someone
checking with local staff to confirm the tank capacity for the 141 tankers
you have identified. Given the number and oftentimes remote locations of
our trucks, we consider this to be substantial collation and research and
have refused that part of your request due to its impact on our
operations.
Regarding your comment about missing entries, we have provided data on
fire trucks rather than all support vehicles in our entire fleet. Based on
the wording of your request that asked for GVM, pump models, breathing
apparatus capacity and your comment to prioritise inclusion of tank
capacity, we interpreted your request to be asking for information
regarding fire trucks only rather than vehicles like utes and vans.
We hope that this explanation is of assistance.
Ngā mihi,
