We refer to your request of 22 October 2025 to Fire and Emergency New Zealand requesting the
following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA):
•
I request an itemised list of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand vehicle fleet as at the
date of this request. Please provide this information in a structured format (CSV or Excel
preferred) including, for each vehicle:
1. Callsign
2. Station and Region
3. Service (Urban, Rural, USAR, Aviation, etc.)
4. Appliance Type Code (e.g. Type 1, Type 2, Tanker Medium etc.)
5. Chassis make and model
6. Body builder / manufacturer
7. Year of manufacture and year commissioned
8. Drivetrain (e.g. 4×2, 4×4, 6×4)
9. Transmission (Auto/Manual/RoadRanger)
10. Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
11. Water and foam tank capacities
12. Main pump model and rated output (L/min @ pressure)
13. Hose reel count (if applicable)
14. Breathing Apparatus seating capacity
15. Registration number and VIN
16. Odometer and/or engine hours (if recorded)
17. Any noted special features (e.g. PTO pump, winch, Comms support body, etc.)
If full release of all fields would be unduly burdensome, please prioritise inclusion of
station, callsign, type, make/model, year, rego number, drivetrain, and tank capacity, as
these are key operational characteristics.
Please see attached, as an
Appendix to this response, data showing the information you requested
about our fleet, where it is recorded.
Please note, to exhaustively identify all requested information, including odometer readings, GVM
and body builder would require significant manual collation and research. In order to collate this
information, we would need to manually check every appliance and its records. Given the number
of vehicles in our fleet, this would be a significant undertaking and would have an unreasonable
impact on our normal operations. For this reason, where the information is not provided in
Appendix One, we are refusing your request under section 18(f) of the OIA, as the information
requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or research.
We have considered whether extending or affixing a charge would allow us to complete your
request. However, the work would need to be completed by someone with specialist fleet
knowledge whose diversion from their core role would have an unreasonable impact on our
operations.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available
at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
We trust that the information being provided is of assistance. If you require further information,
please email [FENZ request email]
Please note that because of the identified public interest in the information that you have
requested, we intend to publish this response (with your personal details removed) on our
website.
