From: M.R.M.
Dear New Zealand Police,
Please provide me - through the FYI.org.nz website - a copy of the NZ Police Directive sent to staff in March 2025, relating to police's File Management Centre (FMC) titled 'Assignment Changes - Theft and Fraud', and saying the NZ Police would no longer be investigating allegations of shoplifting below $500 regardless of lines of inquiry as part of a new nationwide directive.
Also, if the following information request is not included in the abovementioned directive, please provide me with a copy of the relevant documentation with the nationally standardised value thresholds used to assess theft and fraud files (general theft $200, petrol drive off $150, shoplifting $500, fraud (paywave, online, scam, etc.) $1,000, and all other fraud $500.
Yours faithfully,

Kia ora
I refer to your request below. I have been asked to advise you that Police requires an extension of time in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). Specifically, section 15A(1)(b), consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.
Police requires until 25 July 2025 to provide a substantive response to your request, however we are endeavouring to provide this to you as soon as possible.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to make a complaint to an Ombudsman about this extension. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Kind regards, Michelle

Dear Michelle
I have felt compelled to complain to the Ombudsman about your request for an extension of a further 24 working days from date of my information request.
Notwithstanding that I made my information request on 27 May 2025, and that you waited until the thirteen hour or the last of 20 working days to advise me that the Police "requires an extension of time", I do not accept or believe a potential total of 44 days are necessary or justified to make a decision on it. I also very strongly believe that the request is so straightforward and simple, with the information being readily accessible, that it is reasonable to have expected the Police to have made a decision and completed it within the statutory 20 working days.
Yours faithfully,
M.R.M.
Yours sincerely,
