Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
What are the terms of reference for the Science advisory group?
What was the due date for the groups final report?
What is the pay for each member in the group?
What has each member been paid to date?
Do members continue to be paid if the report is delayed?
Are there provisions to ensure the report is delivered within a reasonable timeframe and cost?
Do members face any scrutiny or repercussions for a lack of delivery?

Dear Ministerial Services,
As per the Terms of Reference you have provided MBIE is funding Koi Tū to provide Secretariat support, and members are appointed.
The circular you have referenced also sets out the framework in which fees are set and the Crown’s considerations. Why would the Secretariat be better placed to answer this question, if MBIE is the Crown entity that is paying the appointed member’s fees?
Yours sincerely,
James Webb

Dear LSE Ministerial Servicing,
I am asking for MBIE’s reason for transferring a specific question
Yours sincerely,
James Webb
From: Landon Watt
Dear James,
I refer to your request of 4 March 2025 to the Ministry of Business
Innovation and Employment for information about the Science System
Advisory Group (SSAG). The request was transferred in part to the
University of Auckland (“the University”) on the basis that SSAG is hosted
by Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures (“Koi Tū”). Koi Tū became an
independent entity on 1 April 2025, prior to the date the request was
transferred to the University. I apologise for the delay in the
University’s response. The University’s response is based on the
information we hold.
“3.” What is the pay for each member in the [SSAG] group?
4. What has each member been paid to date [4 March 2025]?”
SSAG Council and Committee member fees are $600/day. The SSAG Council and
Committee’s Chair fees are $900/day. The information we hold about the
total Council and Committee member fees paid to each member is as follows:
Dr Barb Hayden: $17,310
Professor Hamish Spencer: $18,900
Dr Hermann Hauser: $6,600
Professor Mark Ferguson: $13,800
Mr Michael Ahie: $6,438
Ms Nadia Levin: $15,000
Professor Sir Peter Gluckman (Chair): $79,200
Dr William Rolleston: $12,600
Professor Tracey McIntosh: $3,240
5. Do members continue to be paid if the report is delayed?
6. Are there provisions to ensure the report is delivered within a
reasonable timeframe and cost?
7. Do members face any scrutiny or repercussions for a lack of delivery?”
The rules governing the SSAG are as set out in the attached terms of
reference.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt
