Dear Fire and Emergency New Zealand,
Under the provisions of the Official Information Act I request the following information for the FENZ Canterbury District for the period 1 July 2022 to 28 February 2025:
1. A breakdown by vegetation wildfire incident of the registration number of each aircraft ordered for the incident; and
2. The time that each aircraft was engaged at that incident?
Yours faithfully,
Alan Thompson

    Kia ora Alan,

We have made enquiries about what it would take for Fire and Emergency to
fulfil your request, and we are advised that it would be a considerable
undertaking to collate the requested information. The reason is that our
data management system for recording information about aviation providers
does not record data on regions or districts. Instead, it only collates
 data on each individual incident.

This means there is no straightforward way of pulling the requested
information for wildfires in the Canterbury district. It would require the
relevant team to go through the data line by line and identify whether
each incident occurred within Canterbury district boundaries, and then
collate the specific information from each of the incidents that do. The
timeframe requested means that there would be approximately 1,300
individual incidents to check. Identifying the requested information will
therefore be a significant undertaking for Fire and Emergency, and we
consider that fulfilling it would unreasonably interfere with our
 operations.

We are therefore reaching out to ask whether you would like to refine or
 amend your request. For example:

o Instead of receiving this information for all wildfires in a specific
district, would you be interested in receiving information about
 specific wildfires?
o Would you be interested in receiving summary information about
aircraft hours, such as information about the total hours flown
 nationally each financial year?

Amending in one of these ways would make it much more likely that we could
respond to your request. Or, if you have any other suggestions, we are
happy to make further enquiries into them.

We look forward to hearing from you, and if you need further clarification
about this email, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Ngā mihi,

Information Requests Team

    Dear Official Information Requests Team,
Thank you for your advice re my request for information on aircraft use.
I had assumed that these details would be available via your Air Desk system but given the difficulties providing the specific information I was seeking I wish to withdraw my request.
Yours sincerely,
