Police does not record stolen bicycles information in structured fields
and therefore your request cannot be answered in the form you request as
per section 18(g) of the Official Information Act as the information is
not held. In the Official Police Statistics, this information is reported
in Recorded Crime Victims Statistics (RCVS). Police proactively releases
RCVS statistics. These are updated monthly and can be viewed and
downloaded from policedata.nz:
[1]https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publ...
Your questions about stolen bicycle victimisations can be answered using
the report located here:

The guide for using this report is available here:

Bicycle theft is recorded under Theft and Related Offences – Illegal Use
of Property – Bicycle. Kapiti Coast can be selected when switching from
Police Boundary to Local Boundary.

Dear Ministerial Services,
Thanks for the reply;
If the police does not hold the data in structured fields, can an analyst run a report at local district police level, i.e. Kapiti Police Station, on the number of reported bicycle thefts over the last 12 months and the suburb the bicycle was reported stolen from, i.e. Paraparaumu, Raumati. If further detail can be provided such as a specific location, i.e. Paraparaumu train station this would be preferred.
If this data is not available please advise how police are actively tracking bicycles stolen in New Zealand. As per previous OIA reports for other thefts structured data is available, i.e. vehicles stolen within Kapiti Coast.
If a report is made to police today on a bicycle theft in Kapiti, how is this information stored in the police database. Please provide an example of what this data looks like.
Yours sincerely,
Rhys

I have been advised to refer you to the National Recording Standard published here https://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default...
As stated on page 62 of the NRS, a bicycle is not recorded as a vehicle but as an item (with the bicycle theft offence).
A bicycle is recorded as theft of a bicycle offence (this data is accessible on policedata.nz as previously provided). The local boundaries are also available on policedata.nz down to TLA, Area Unit, or Meshblock level (this is described in the guide).
