Kia ora John,

Thank you for your request, we acknowledge your refinement of your request. Instead of providing the specific address of where each incident occurred, would you be happy to just receive the name of the street on which the fire occurred? We suggest this as the most specific geographical information we typically provide when we send incident data is the street name.

We do this because there is a privacy interest in information about incidents at individual properties, especially if they are at residential properties. Information about a property fire is information related to the personal situation of the property’s owners or residents. While the specific address does not provide you with names of property owners or residents, there is a reasonable chance that they could be identified through the release of these details and information about their personal situation disclosed. By excluding specific addresses, and just providing street names, we minimise the risk of this such disclosure.

Please confirm by EOD Thursday 6 June 2024 you are happy to proceed with this refinement.

Ngā mihi,

Dear Official Information Requests,

Kia ora,

Thank you for your response and for acknowledging my refined request.

I understand the privacy concerns related to providing specific addresses of residential fire incidents. However, for the purposes of my research, having the specific address is crucial. The detailed analysis I intend to conduct requires information about the immediate surroundings of the fire location, such as driveways, trees, utility poles, and nearby structures, which cannot be accurately assessed with only the street name.

To address the privacy concerns, I am willing to sign a confidentiality agreement or any other necessary document to ensure that the information is handled with the utmost care and not disclosed inappropriately. I can also assure you that the data will be used strictly for research purposes and will be anonymized in any publications or presentations.

Please let me know if this arrangement is acceptable or if there are any other steps I can take to facilitate the provision of the specific addresses.

I look forward to your response.

Ngā mihi,

John You

Kia or John,

Due to your request being provided through the FYI website, the information we provide would be accessible to the public. If we were to provide information with a confidentiality agreement, we would require an alternate avenue to provide information to you such as a personal email address.

We would also like to understand why you are conducting this research as this will help us accurately assess the public interest in releasing individual addresses before proceeding with your request.

If you could get back to us EOD Monday 10 June 2024, that would be appreciated.
