Chemicals and metals in New Zealand water

J Wilson made this Official Information request to Taumata Arowai–the Water Services Regulator

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for J Wilson to read recent responses and update the status.

From: J Wilson

Dear Taumata Arowai–the Water Services Regulator,

Please can you tell me what chemicals can be found in New Zealand water -- in reservoirs, lakes, streams, rivers, the sea, drinking and washing water. Please detail the chemicals and metals, and their levels, found in New Zealand water over the last five years.

Are there metals in the water of any type or location, such as copper, mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminium, barium, iron, strontium, graphene? What are the levels of these or other metals in the water?
Are they all removed from drinking water?

Are there any micro-plastics or nanoparticles found in the water of any type, and if so, what are they, and what are they levels of them? If so, where do these items come from?

Please provide details, thank you.

Yours faithfully,
J Wilson

We hereby acknowledge receipt of your information request under the Official Information Act 1982.

Generally, public sector agencies must respond to official information requests as soon as they can and within 20 working days. However, the response date needs to take into consideration the summer holidays (25 December to 15 January) and Waitangi Day (6 February 2024). This would make our response to you due by 12 February. While we don't treat this date as a target, we need to mention this to you because key people who would assist in the response may be away on holiday.

All the best for the festive season and we will contact you in the new year.

Ngâ mihi
Rosie

Please find attached a formal notice from us to extend the deadline for our response to your request under section 15A of the OIA.

We have also transferred the part of your request which asks for information on nanoparticles and microplastics under section 14 to the Ministry for the Environment, as they are the best agency to respond. The transfer letter with details is attached.

Your request is quite broad. We have interpreted your request as asking for all information Taumata Arowai holds on chemicals and metals in drinking water, including historical data.
Because of this there is a large volume of records associated with the current parameters of your request, and this would require substantial collation from us.

We are seeking clarification from you on your request to understand what you are looking for.
Can you please confirm if you are looking for information related to chemicals and metals in a specific water supply OR at a specific point in time?
