We have just realised we sent you an email seeking clarification of your
19 December 2023 request for Official Information Act 1992 (OIA) in error
as it was not ready to send in the form sent to you. Please accept our
apologies.

We are processing your OIA request and we are seeking clarification of
your request about Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. We
want to ensure that we understand what information you are requesting.

ANPR cameras are used for a number of purposes. For example, they can be
used for road safety enforcement, for accessing and managing car parking
facilities (e.g. at airports) or to manage access to other sites. ANPR
cameras are operated by both public organisations and private businesses
(e.g. car parking firms). We understand your request relates to public
organisations’ use of APNR cameras.

To help us respond to your request for official information, can you
please clarify whether you are seeking information about ANPR cameras
operated by:

o the Greater Wellington Regional Council; and/or
o some or all of the cities in the region (Wellington City Council,
Lower Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Porirua City
Council); and/or
o some or all of the district councils in the region (Masterton District
Council, South Wairarapa District Council, Kâpiti Coast District
Council);

as well as those operated by the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
(NZTA) and NZ Police in the Greater Wellington Region.

Can you also please clarify whether you are seeking information about ANPR
safety cameras monitoring road users or all ANPR cameras operated by these
public organisations.

Once we have received a response to this clarification email, NZTA will be
able to continue processing your request.
