I am writing to receive the following information:

1. In 2022, please provide how many communications were provided to General first year BioMed and BHS students in regards to information about sitting the UCAT for entry to clinical programmes, including information on how to register for the test and what the registration dates were, and on what date and format the communications occurred;

2. In, 2022, please provide how many communications were provided to MAPAS registered first year BioMed and BHS students in regqrds to information about sitting the UCAT for entry to clinical programmes, including information on how to register for the test and what the registration dates were, and on what date and format the communications occured;

3. In 2022, please provide how many communications were provided to General first year BioMed and BHS students in regards to information about sitting the CST for entry to clinical programmes, including information on how to register for the test and what the registration dates were, and on what date and in what format the communications occurred;

4. In, 2022, please provide how many communications were provided to MAPAS registered first year BioMed and BHS students in regards to information about sitting the CST for entry to clinical programmes, including information on how to register for the test and what the registration dates were, and on what date and in what format the communications occured;

5. What steps did the University of Auckland and Faculty of Medicine and Health Science make, to abide by Legislation in Aotearoa New Zealand, to provide reasonable considerations to students with disabilities, especially in regards to reading disabilities, so as to propagate the necessary information to said students regarding the necessity to sit the CST and UCAT, including information on how to register for each test and what the registration dates were?

6. On what date in 2022 did the University of Auckland and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences become aware that the MAPAS First Year advisor had resigned?

7. In 2022, after becoming aware of the resignation of the MAPAS Firat Year Adcisor, what steps did the University of Auckland and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences take to provide the same support, information and services to MAPAS First Year students, that they had been promised they would receive, and thr University of Aucklamd advertises would be provided?

8. Please provide the Policy that states that MAPAS is responsible for providing all information regarding entry to Clinical Programmes to Māori and Pasifika students enrolled with MAPAS, including communications regarding registering for the UCAT;

9. Please provide the University of Auckland Policy that states that Disabled students with a physical disability, that require Mobility Parking, cannot be provided access to buildings via the closest access points, so as to attend lectures, tutorials and labs;

10. What is the University of Auckland doing to eduacte individual Faculties and Faculty Heads, so they are aware of their legal requirement to provide reasonable accommodations to physically disabled students, including providing access to buildings from mobility carpark? Please provide all communications sent to the Faculties and all teaching staff in 2022 and 2023 that informs them of their legal requirement to provide such reasonable considerations;

11. The University of Auckland says it prides itself on equitable access to disabled students and that ableism is not accepted. Please provide:
a. All written policies staff must abide by when communicating with students;
b. All written policies that stipulate by what means students are allowed to communicate with teaching staff and, thus, receive responses via the same means, and as to what level a students choice in communication style is protected.

Dear Kiri,

 

I refer to your email of 27 July 2023. Many of the requests made appear to
be in essence personal complaints about University services. The OIA is
not a suitable means to make complaints – complaints about University
service delivery etc should be made through the normal channels. The OIA
does not require agencies to create justifications or explanations for
matters of interest to requesters.

 

o Your requests 1-4 are refused under section 18(h) of the OIA on the
ground that they are trivial. Students intending to apply for clinical
programmes - including Medicine - are informed of the necessary
components of a valid application through the website and all
application pathway information sites. For MAPAS students, additional
reminders are provided, including the following: notification at the
first MAPAS wānanga held before the start of Semester 1 (in 2022, this
wānanga was held online); reminders at MAPAS cohort meetings; and
slides on the Canvas page for MAPAS students unable to attend the
cohort meetings.

 

o In response to request 5, reasonable accommodations are provided in
relation to special conditions for the UCAT and CST.

 

o Request 6 is refused under section 18(h) of the OIA on the ground that
the information requested is trivial.

 

o In response to requests 7 and 10, the OIA does not require the
University to create a list of all the steps taken to ensure
continuity of service and compliance with legislation. Your specific
request for all communications with Faculties and teaching staff that
inform them about the requirement to provide reasonable accommodations
to students with disabilities is refused under section 18(f) of the
OIA, as this cannot be provided without substantial collation or
research.

 

o In response to your requests 8, 9 and 11 for University policies, the
University’s policies are publicly available on our website:

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
