Hospital Waste Damaging The Health Of Others
K. Roestenburg made this Official Information request to Health New Zealand
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for K. Roestenburg to read recent responses and update the status.
From: K. Roestenburg
Dear Health New Zealand,
On the 10th of May 2023 a hire truck from Palmerston North arrived to Interwaste's (International Waste Ltd) high risk hazardous waste facility in Wellington. Just to confirm the specific business that I am talking about in-case there is any confusion it is the business that is located at 12 Broken Hill Road, Wellington and is owned by Kelly Sutton, Lincoln Falconer, Hamish Sisson and Christopher Flavell.
To further specify, they have a monopoly on this niche of the waste industry and take majority of the hazardous waste that the hospitals around the country produce.
Moving forward this truck had a sticker on the rear stating that it contained infectious waste and I suspect this waste came from the hospitals around the Palmerston North region.
In the morning there was no detectable emissions coming from International Wastes Ltd's premises outside of their legal boundary or inside my warehouse however shortly after this truck was unloaded at the facility and Interwaste began autoclaving this waste emissions started spilling out of the streets and filling every nook and cranny of my warehouse.
These emissions were thick, repugnant, inescapable and smelt like feces, bodily fluids and strange indescribable chemicals. It was that strong that I began to gag when I breathed it in and eventually I was forced to leave the building and go home as I couldn't handle it.
International Waste Ltd is aware of these emissions and has been knowingly operating in breach of their Discharge To Air Consent ever since I moved into the area. This has been occurring on a regular basis for at-least the past 5 years and during this time interwaste has
-Claimed that these emissions are completely safe to breathe in - multiple times over multiple years - even when cancer concerns were brought up due to the side effects I was experiencing. This was until I conducted Whole Air Sample Tests of the emissions and found out they weren't safe to breathe in. After this occurred they refused to talk anymore and instead it got worse as they would on purposely expose me and others in the area to these emissions in a bid to get me to leave because I was complaining too much and causing them too many headaches.
-Claimed that these emissions were coming from the rubbish tip, and not them, yet nobody in the area has ever smelt the rubbish tip. This once again has happened on numerous occasions.
-Claimed that there is no emissions what so ever - when the entire area smells like feces, formaldehyde and melted plastic, including my warehouse. This also has happened on numerous occasions.
-Lied to the regional council in what appears to be a delaying tactic pretending they don't know where the emissions are coming from when it's coming from the waste that is being autoclaved inside their facility and also the autoclave itself when it is opened and volatized waste spews out because they haven't vacuumed out the emissions beforehand or waited for the emissions to subside before opening.
Since International Waste Ltd is more than happy to breach their Discharge To Air Consent and expose everyone in the area to dangerous chemicals that has the potential to shorten lifespans and cause serious side effects I have contacted you to find out:
What was sent to Interwaste for processing leading up to the 10th of May 2023?
I would also like to ask if Health New Zealand is aware that the business they are sending their hazardous and infectious waste to for processing is operating outside of their discharge to air consent and has done so for at-least 5 years endangering not only their own staffs health but also that of the general public in the vicinity?
Yours faithfully,
Kris
