Interwaste Exposures

K. Roestenbuirg made this Official Information request to Wellington Regional Council

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for K. Roestenbuirg to read a recent response and update the status.

From: K. Roestenbuirg

Dear Greater Wellington Regional Council,

On the 22/03/23 Interwaste (International Waste Ltd) released gasified infectious waste beyond their legal boundary in breach of the Discharge To Air Permit that the GWRC issued Interwaste that smelt like fecal matter and was classed as offensive by those who had to endure breathing it in (4/6)

On the 23/03/23 Interwaste (International Waste Ltd) released gasified medical waste beyond their legal boundary in breach of the Discharge To Air Permit that the GWRC issued Interwaste that smelt like autoclaved hospital waste and classed as was highly offensive by those who to endure breathing it in (6/6)

During both of these releases my staff members - and also those working and living near the Interwaste High-Risk Waste Plant at 10 Broken Hill Road were exposed to and forced to breathe in carcinogens, toxic volatile organic compounds and hazardous chemicals against their will.

I have been advised that nobody from the GWRC environmental team came out to inspect this breach of permit when complaints were lodged and instead people were left to suffer.

1. Why did the GWRC not come out and inspect the breaches that were occurring?
2. Has the GWRC ever heard of noise control never coming out? And if not why do they believe that the response to these two discharges are acceptable?
2. What action has been taken against Interwaste for the constant breaches of their discharge permit over the past 5 years?
3. I'd like a copy of all the smelt complaints made against Interwaste along with the actions that the GWRC has taken against each complaint.

Finally do not email me your response or email me any more in general. All communications between us are now to be done in a public forum such as this website.

Yours faithfully,

K. Roestenbuirg
