Logistics, training, NZDF vehicles available to be sent to Ukraine

James Hunter made this Official Information request to New Zealand Defence Force

The request was partially successful.

Dear New Zealand Defence Force,

All questions below are in relation to date at 1 May 2023.
Assume answers are in relation to a scenario where the NZ government decided to send equipment & weapons for Ukraine Armed Forces.

-Of the NZLAV’s purchased by Chile (22 total), have the remainder of the NZLAVs (13) been shipped to Chile?
-If still awaiting departure, is there a time frame on their departure?
-Has Chile cancelled any of the remainder on order? If so, how many?

-Are there still 8 NZLAV’s for sale /available for export to Europe?
-If the number has changed, how many are available?
-What is the sale price of the NZLAV’s on a per unit basis, or price range (assume dependent of specifications?

-How many of the Pinzgauer Light Operational Vehicles surplus to requirements could realistically be made operational for use in Europe?
-What would be a realistic time frame to prepare the vehicles?

-How many of the Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles are surplus to requirements & could realistically be made operational for use in Europe?
-What would be a realistic time frame to prepare the vehicles?

-What logistical issues are involved from NZDF perspective in moving these vehicles to Europe by either sea (HMNZS Canterbury?) or air?
-Does NZDF have capability to move the vehicles or would NZDF partner with another country or would commercial sources be used?
-Are there any training issues with operation of these vehicles? If so what?
-How many hours would it take to learn the systems on these vehicles, assume reasonable driving knowledge.

-Does the training for any of the vehicles require specialist instructors, assume reasonable driving knowledge? If so, are any of those key NZDF training personal in UK/Europe?

-Have any of the NZDF supplies of Javelin ATGM been used in training or otherwise by NZDF since 24 Feb 2022, ie has the number in stock reduced since since this date?

-Is the NZDF evaluating or considering purchasing the new Australian Hawkei protected mobility vehicle?

Yours faithfully,
Mr Hunter
