Supression of Bible reading by staff on 6 April 2023
John made this Official Information request to Pakuranga College
The request was successful.
From: John
Dear Pakuranga College,
Please share all communications, memos, reports, etc between the Board, Management, Staff and Teachers related to the supression of the Bible reading by staff on or around 6 April 2023.
Yours faithfully,
John

Good Afternoon
There seems to be some incorrect information circulating. No one has been
expelled from the school as claimed on social media.
What did happen was that a group of students refused to go to class when
the bell rang for the end of the lunch break, after they were told to do
so by several staff, including myself. We will be addressing this truancy
when school resumes in Term 2.
The leader of the group was collected from school by his parents. The
college will be following up with the student and his parents at the start
of next term.
The staff were simply trying to get the students out of the rain and off
to their classes.
Perhaps a very good example of how social media is used to circulate false
information.
The only correspondence we have to share under your OIA is the above
statement which has been sent to interested parties.

Dear Williams, Michael,

Dear John
Thank you for the OIA request ,
As you have been advised there has been no action taken for students reading the Bible, however we have dealt with a number of students who were truant form or late to their lasses after lunch on 6 April.
Obviously for privacy reasons we cannot provide you with any information which would enable individuals to be identified.
What I can share is that 5 students were dealt with for truancy on the last period of Thursday 6 April and 64 were dealt with regarding being late to class.
The reasons for being truant were varied and the consequences in each case were decided upon depending on the individual circumstances. The consequences ranged from a talk with the students and a phone call to their parents, through to one suspension, (the student has been allowed to return to school).
Likewise of the 64 students late to class, there were a wide range of reasons and for some it was only a few minutes for others it was a significant part of the lesson they missed. Once again, each student was dealt with individually depending on their circumstances. The consequences ranged from a quick chat with their classroom teacher about being prompt, through to a detention and in a few cases where, warranted after discussion with parents/caregivers, a stand down.
