Accidents involving overseas drivers
Charles Finley made this Official Information request to Ministry of Transport
The request was successful.
From: Charles Finley
Dear Ministry of Transport,
Please can you share stats on accident numbers over the past 5 years (to cover the covid period) showing whether they were caused by kiwi drivers or overseas drivers. I’m interested in seeing if the rhetoric around dangerous drivers being tourists ever had any legs as the last couple of years has felt just as dangerous on the roads.
If possible, regional splits would be interesting, urban / rural etc.
Yours faithfully,
Charles Finley

Ministry of Transport
Dear Charles
I am writing to you in response to your recent Official Information Act
request to the Ministry of Transport (the Ministry) where you have asked:
“Please can you share stats on accident numbers over the past 5 years (to
cover the covid period) showing whether they were caused by kiwi drivers
or overseas drivers. I’m interested in seeing if the rhetoric around
dangerous drivers being tourists ever had any legs as the last couple of
years has felt just as dangerous on the roads.
If possible, regional splits would be interesting, urban / rural etc.”
Each year the Ministry produces the safety statistics which includes the
information you are seeking in relation to overseas drivers. The
information up to 2021 can be found here:
[1]https://www.transport.govt.nz/statistics...
The Ministry publishes these statistics annually, for the 12 months
preceding, therefore the information relating to 2022 will be published
towards the end of 2023 as we do not currently hold this information.
Could you please confirm if the information available online satisfies
your request.
Kind regards,
Ministerial Services
