Kia ora Anna

Thank you for your request for official information, received on 15
February 2023 for:
“May I please have the numbers of New Zealanders diagnosed with
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or other spongiform encephalopathies for the
following years? 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 (if any data is
available so far)”

Te Whatu Ora’s system codes subacute spongiform encephalopathy on the same
code as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and only holds data on the number of
hospitalisations with these causes as the primary diagnosis rather than
the number of people who have these diseases.

In order for Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand to progress with your
request, we would like to confirm that you are happy to refine your
request to the below:
“May I please have the numbers of New Zealanders hospitalised for
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from 2017 – 2023”.

Please note, under section 15 of the Official Information Act 1982, any
clarification or amendments made to a request within seven days after the
date it is received, may be treated as a new request and the time limit
for the response restarts.

I would note that the University of Otago’s Department of Medicine
maintains a CJD registry
([1]https://www.otago.ac.nz/cjd-registry/ind...), which may be able to
assist you.

If you have any questions, please get in touch at
[2][email address].

Hi Anna, I am doing a dissertation on CJD and wondered if you found any other statistics??

Thank you for asking this; as someone who is frustrated by not being able to donate blood due to living in the UK in the 1990's it would be helpful if your dissertation can inform the NZ Blood service.
