Who owns the New Zealand Drivers License?
Tangata Whenua made this Official Information request to Michael Wood
The request was partially successful.
From: Tangata Whenua
Dear Michael Wood,
Please confirm the identity of the owner of the New Zealand Driver's License.
It is my belief that the New Zealand Driver's License is the exclusive property of the Ministry of Land Transport and the Minister responsible for that department is Hon Michael Wood.
Therefore, Hon Michael Wood is responsible for every single Driver's License issued from the New Zealand Land Transport Ministry.
When a private citizen purchases a government document, it still remains property of the government. the payer / purchaser has no ownership of government issued documents.
Why does the license not offer full disclosure to prevent police officers from mistaking the license as our personal and private property?
Yours faithfully,
Tangata Whenua

Thank you again for your email on 14 December 2022 to Hon Michael wood,
regarding a New Zealand licence card. Thank you for your patience with
this matter.
New Zealand driver licences are the property of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency – this is outlined in section 30 of the [1]Land Transport Act 1998,
which also sets out the circumstances under which a driver licence is to
be surrendered, including to an enforcement officer such as the Police.
Additionally, clause 63 of the [2]Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule
1999 sets out the form of driver licences, and what details must be
included on a licence card; under this clause, there is no requirement for
any government symbols or disclosure statements to be included on any
licence that is issued.
I hope this information is of assistance to you.
