Tçnâ koe Jai

I refer to your official information request dated 13/12/22 for the number
of cases for the Flu in NZ between 2016 - 2022.

Te Whatu Ora has transferred part of your request to the Ministry of
Justice. This section of your request "the number of deaths of the same"
is believed to be more closely connected with the functions of the
Ministry of Justice - Coroners office.

In these circumstances, we are required by section 14 of the Official
Information Act to transfer your request.

You will hear further from the ministry of health concerning that part of
your request.

Kia ora Jai Ganesh

Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand did a partial transfer of your request to
the Ministry of Justice of 20 December 2022. The partial transfer refers
to the “number of death from flu and “related” for the period 2016-2022.
Partial transfer email attached.

For this request the Ministry of Justice can provide you the number of
deaths notified to the coroner between 1 January 2016 and 31 December
2022, where any of the following keywords were recorded in any of the
cause of death fields in the case management system (including provisional
cause of death and secondary cause of death):

“flu”

“influenza”

“adenovirus”

“rhinovirus”

Can you please confirm that you are happy with the keywords we have
proposed, or if there are some that you would like added/removed?

We can break this data down by the month the death was notified to the
coroner.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Ngâ mihi,
