NZBS Annual reports
Jai Ganesh made this Official Information request to New Zealand Blood and Organ Service
The request was successful.
From: Jai Ganesh
Dear New Zealand Blood Service,
I have two questions to do with the NZBS Annual reports
1) How come the numbers in figure 2.1 from 2018 and 2021 are different for the years it covers?
2) When I look at 2014-2018's average adverse transfusion events from the 2018 report, the average is 33.8. In 2020 that is 44 and 2021 it is 41. What caused a 30% increase in adverse events?
Yours faithfully,
Jai Ganesh

We believe this refers to the haemovigilance report. We have standardised
our reporting framework and the 2017-2021 data has been re-checked against
this to ensure the same standards have been applied year on year. The
number of events is a function of the level of reporting as well as the
number of events that have occurred. We have worked continuously to
encourage more reporting across the NZ hospital sector. It should be noted
that reports have decreased in 2020 and 2021.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at

They don't test for spike proteins and a change in the way they report the data led to a 30% discrepancy in post transfusion adverse events...
