ANPR Surveillance (2) - Searches of AT's indefinite database of license plates
M B made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport
The request was successful.
From: M B
Dear Auckland Transport,
Thank you for the indepth reply previously. This is a follow up request from https://fyi.org.nz/request/20718-anpr-tr...
The request relates to "anonymised ANPR data" that retained indefinitely, which was in fact capable of being accessed upon request irrespective of its anonymisation.
Can you please provide information on the following:
- How many requests to search have the Police made of your ANPR database (and forwarded to the Digital Technology Delivery General Manager)? If possible, please categorise these into accepted and declined requests per year.
- How many locations / 'hits' from your 179 ANPR cameras are currently stored in this database?
Beyond the scope of the OIA, I ask whether Auckland transport intends to consult with the OPC on the privacy implications of storing precise location data of every vehicle indefinitely. This is a grave privacy concern and not clearly expressed within any public forum by AT. Access to a large quantum of precise location data from 179 ANPR cameras in Auckland alone may give rise to questions (at least) of privacy expectations and warrant requirements, irrespective of its public collection and reversable anonymisation. In my previous request it was stated that no consultation has taken place with the OPC on ANPR data in the last 5 years (https://fyi.org.nz/request/20718/respons...).
Yours faithfully,
Mason.
