Changes to Dunedin SH1 Traffic Light Programming

Hubert Hiffenberg made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency

The request was successful.

From: Hubert Hiffenberg

Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,

Can you please confirm if there have been any changes made to the traffic light programming on either one-way section of SH1 between George Street (south) and Howe Street (north).

I've noticed over the last week that congestion has greatly increased and the synchronisation of the traffic lights has stopped. Previously a car travelling at just below the speed limit (~45km/h) would receive all lights in sequence, allowing traffic to flow smoothly. However now every other light is red for this traffic, making traffic stop and start multiple times along this section of road (in both directions) which increases trip times and number of cars sharing this section of road at the same time. Has a change in traffic light programming occurred? If so can you include any relevant briefings or internal communications related to this changed.

If these lights are not managed by NZTA please forwards this OIA/LGOIMA to DCC or the relevant stakeholder.

Yours faithfully,

Hubert Hiffenberg
