    Tēnā koe A.J,

Thank you for your email of 11 November 2022 to the Ministry of Education
 requesting the following information:

1.    The number of students in the past 5 years until present day that
have died on the grounds of an education facility in new zealand. Please
provide the figures in a month/yearly breakdown.

2.    How many of those student deaths from the above request were
accidental, suicide or medical. Once again please provide the figures in a
monthly/yearly breakdown and include ages of the deceased if possible.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
 (the Act).

The Ministry of Education does not collect or hold information on deaths
that occur on the grounds of an education facility, the cause of these
deaths, nor the age of the student who died. Therefore, I am refusing your
request for this information under Section 18(g) of the Act as that the
information requested is not held by the department or venture or Minister
 of the Crown or organisation.

The Ministry’s Traumatic Incident Team respond, by invite, to help
affected education settings when events cause sudden or significant
disruption, affect learners and/or staff, and/or attract media interest to
the school, kura, early learning service or early childhood education
 service.

The Ministry records information on the type of event that the Traumatic
Incident Team attend. Examples of events that affect education settings in
this way are sudden death, suspected suicide, or serious injury of
children, young people, staff members or family/whānau.

As a result, individual traumatic incident files may hold information in
scope of this request, however, these are not recorded in a readily
retrievable format and will not cover all potential deaths on school
grounds as the Traumatic Response Team may not be invited to attend in all
circumstances. In addition, the Ministry does not make decisions regarding
cause of death; the Coroner is responsible for determining cause of death,
including for accidental deaths and suicides.

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review my decision on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the
Act. You can do this by writing to [1][email address] or to
Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.

Ngā mihi
