Request for information on Country Research Unit

M. Kang made this Official Information request to Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for M. Kang to read recent responses and update the status.

From: M. Kang

Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,

I am writing to request information about the process of producing and delivering Country of Origin Information(COI) for the refugee decision-making process, which I couldn’t find on your ministry’s website.

(1) I would like to know the detailed structure and composition of the Country Research Unit(CRU), under the Intelligence, Data & Insights Group at your Ministry.
- How many officers and researchers are in the unit? What are their mandates?
- I found an organization chart of the Migration New Zealand(request/17962/response/71048), but somehow IDI and CRU were not included in the chart. I would be grateful if you could provide me with an organisational chart of CRU.

(2) I hope to know the detailed process of producing and delivering COI. Please provide me with the following questions (process introductions or flow charts are welcome!):
- What are the procedures to request COI (Who can request COIs? Can external persons, such as researchers, access the database? How long does it take to get the information?)
- Do you have a COI Database system? If yes, how does it work? Do you use a platform or program?
- What is the scope and usage allowed for COI? Is there any law or regulations about this matter?
- What is the methodology for producing and verification of COI?

(3) Do you have any training system for CRU? If yes, could you provide details about the training system?

(4) Does CRU has external cooperation? For example, CRU might communicate with international organizations or academic institutions.

Any relevant document or resource is welcome.
If the information I request is too much for displaying publicly here, you can refer me to a person who can answer my question.

All information will be used solely for academic purposes. Thank you so much!

Yours faithfully,
M. Kang
